Reflexology

The History of Reflexology

The origins of reflexology can be traced back thousands of years to ancient Chinese and even Egyptian times. More recently, Dr W Fitzgerald, an American ear, nose and throat specialist became interested and developed the practice of treating parts of the body by applying pressure at a distant point. He divided the body into ten longitudinal zones. Another American, Eunice Ingham further developed his work into Reflexology as we know it today. In the 1960’s a student of Eunice Ingham’s, Doreen Bayly introduced Reflexology to the UK and established the Bayly School of Reflexology in 1978.

The Theory of Reflexology

The body is divided into 10 longitudinal zones, each of which extend through the body in line with the fingers and toes. A zone runs from each toe up along the body to the top of the head and down to its corresponding finger. A flow of energy links all organs and structures within each zone. In whichever zone an organ is found in the body, a reflex point is found in the same zone in the foot.

TheTreatment Session

Reflexology is a safe non-invasive treatment. It is not a diagnostic treatment but areas of imbalance in the body may be detected and helped back into a healthy state of balance.

A light but definite pressure will be applied to the various reflex points on the feet. When pressure is applied different sensations may be felt in these areas; some people may just be aware pressure is being applied; some people feel a slight discomfort whilst others may feel a sharp pain. The differing degrees of tenderness being felt indicate which parts of the body are working well and which are not.

Sometimes, when working on the feet, ‘gritty’ areas will be felt. These are termed ‘crystal deposits’ which settle at the reflex points causing a blockage in the energy zone. The massage of that particular reflex point will cause these deposits to disperse and therefore clear the energy blockage.

Each treatment session will last for approximately 45-60 minutes with the exception of the first treatment when a brief medical history will be taken. An average course of treatments involves 3 to 6 at weekly intervals dependant upon the severity of the condition being treated. Once the body has been brought back into balance; maintenance visits would be recommended every 4 or 6 weeks.

Or, why not just treat yourself to an hour of pampering and relation to help you escape from the stresses and strains of every day life!

Reactions to Treatment

Following treatment some individuals may experience slight reaction or ‘healing crises’. This is a healthy sign that the body is ‘healing’ itself and will not be severe or debilitating. These reactions could range from a runny nose, increased thirst (water should be taken), headache, frequent urination or an increase/decrease in body temperature. These reactions will occur within 24-48 hours of the treatment and will disappear just as quickly.

How Reflexology Can Help You!
.
Many conditions can be helped through reflexology, including:
  • Headaches/Migraine
  • Back Pain
  • Hormonal Imbalances
  • Infertility
